Volta River project: Tema Harbour, Preliminary Works

Scope and Contents

A collection of prints, measuring 115 x 100 mm, reprinted from original negatives (measuring 3½ x 2½ inches). The originals were taken by Mr. F.L. Simpson when he was handling the Tema Harbour Schedule at the Ministry of Communications and Works as an Assistant Secretary (Administrative Officer). Simpson provided the identifications and notes.

Dates: 1953 - 1954

West African Railways

Scope and Contents A collection of photographs created by the railway engineer Charles Bell Swan. The discovery of gold at Tarkwa during the 1890s provided the stimulus for the establishment of the Gold Coast Government Railway. Sekondi was chosen as the terminal port to support mining operations and construction began there in 1898, reaching Tarkwa in 1901. The line was extended to Kumasi in 1903.
