This is a semi-autobiographical memoir recording how Helen Shaw’s parents travelled to Malaya in September 1940 during the Second World War, where her father, Dr William D. Ainslie, took up the post of Medical Officer of Health, Penang. Shaw was born in May 1941. She recounts how she and her mother Marcia Margaret Ainslie were evacuated from Penang to Singapore, and then Java, after Penang was bombed by the Japanese in December 1941; their travel from Java to Western Australia in January...
