Newscuttings on Southern and East Africa

Scope and Contents

Four volumes of newscuttings, three relating to Southern and East Africa and one to the Native Question in South Africa, and loose cuttings on related subjects. Many of the articles concern the activities of the colonial powers in Africa, notably Great Britain, Germany, Spain and France.

Scope and Contents Collection of five albums of family photographs, made up almost entirely of amateur snapshots between 80 x 60 mm. and 110 x 150 mm., and many of which are of purely personal interest. Sydney Tyers album

An albumen print, mounted on card, measuring 206 x 138 mm, captioned 'St Helena' on the mount. The view looks down from the steep hillside at the summit on which the barracks were built, and shows the buildings lining Main Street which leads into the Grand Parade. At the edge of the Parade is St James' Church, with the Castle on the further side. The Esplanade, with the Harbour beyond, is at the left of the print.

These were numbered 3, 6, 10 and 11 and the remaining boxes were unnumbered. Watercolours and drawings of Edward Frome

Scope and Contents This is a collection of art work created by the Royal Engineer Edward Charles Frome (1802-1890). In 1929 Frome’s surviving daughter, Mrs Frank Wynne, presented some of the South Australian drawings to the Royal Empire Society through the good offices of Sir Harry Wilson, to whom she bequeathed the rest of the collection. Zanzibar (Chandler Collection)

A collection of separate photographs and a panorama. The photographs date from Chandler's residence in east Africa, and are chiefly of Zanzibar Island, but 60-73 and 83-87 are of Dar es Salaam, 75 is probably of England, 88-89 are of South Africa and 90-96 are of the Victoria Falls.
