Scope and Contents
The Church Missionary Society photograph collection consists of photographic prints, glass and film negatives, and lantern slides. The prints in CMS 1-17 were selected from the CMS’s Photo Bureau, the majority being mounted on sheets of paper annotated with captions. Many photographs would have been taken to illustrate articles in the society’s periodicals including ‘Church Missionary Gleaner’, ‘Church Missionary Intelligencer’ and their successors. This broad heading has been used to cover a substantial collection of loose prints, dating chiefly from the period 1960-1982, but including a few of earlier date. Collection of albumen prints by various photographers. The prints are of various sizes and show views of Europe, Malta in 1860 (numbers 12-26), Middle East and India. Numbers 93-145 relate to a visit to India in 1880, although the prints themselves are views taken in the 1860s mainly by Samuel Bourne. The majority of the prints have handwritten captions.
