Copies of two papers by Hooker on the historical development of gas turbines and jet propulsion, including a survey of mainly British engines, and also on "The Barnoldswick Saga", on the development of the Whittle jet engine, 1943-46.

Biographical / Historical

Stanley Hooker was born on 30 September 1907, 5th son of William Harry and Ellen Mary Hooker. He was educated at Borden Grammar School, Imperial College, London and Brasenose College, University of Oxford (becoming an Honorary Fellow in 1980). In 1936 he married (1st), the Hon. Margaret Bradbury, having one daughter, and in 1950 married (2nd), Kate Maria Garth, having one daughter.

Hooker's career included the following positions: Scientific and Research Department, Admiralty, 1935-38; Rolls Royce Limited, 1938-48; Bristol Aero Engines, 1948-59; Chief Engineer in the Engine Division of the Bristol Aeroplane Company Limited, 1951 and a Director in 1952; Technical Director (Aero), Bristol Siddeley Engines Limited, 1959; Technical Director, Bristol Engine Division of Rolls-Royce Limited, 1966-71; Group Technical Director, Rolls-Royce Limited, 1971-77; Technical Adviser to the Chairman, 1977-81, and Consultant, 1981-84, Rolls-Royce Limited.

Hooker died on 24 May 1984.
