Biographical / Historical

Norma Christina Elizabeth Wagstaff was born in Shropshire on 12 March 1942, the daughter of Norman and Edith Wagstaff (née Johnson). After her father's death in 1945, her mother reverted to her maiden name and she became known as Norma Johnson. She was educated at a boarding school in Bexhill-on-Sea; Oakfield Preparatory School, in Dulwich; and Peckham School for Girls. Se married John Major, 1970, with whom she has a son and a daughter.

On leaving school, she trained as a teacher and worked at St Michael and All Angels School, in Camberwell.

She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, 1999.

His publications include: "Chequers: the Prime Minister's Country House and its History" (1997); and "Joan Sutherland: the Authorised Biography" (1994).
