Biographical / Historical

Francis Pym was born in 1922 and educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He was a Conservative MP representing the constituencies of Cambridgeshire (1961-83) and South East Cambridgeshire (1983-87). He served as Opposition Whip (1964-70), Government Chief Whip (1970-73), Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1973-74), Secretary of State for Defence (1979-81), Leader of the House of Commons (1981-82), and as Foreign Secretary (1982-83). He was made a life peer in 1987 and died in 2008. He published "The Politics of Consent" (1984) and "Sentimental journey: tracing an outline of family history" (1998).
