Biographical / Historical

Sir Michael Franklin enjoyed a distinguished public career as a civil servant. He was Private Secretary to Christopher Soames at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, 1961-4, and went on to become Head of the European Secretariat within the Cabinet Office, 1977-81. He served briefly as a Permanent Secretary at the Department of Trade, 1982-3, before returning to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food as Permanent Secretary, 1983-7.
