Sir Anthony Buzzard was born on 28 April 1902, the eldest son of Sir E. Farquhar Buzzard (1st Baronet) and his wife May. He succeeded his father in 1945. In 1932 he married Margaret Elfreda Knapp, they had two sons and one daughter. He died on 10 March 1972. He attended the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne and Dartmouth. During his naval career he was mainly involved in gunnery, staff and naval appointments, including service on the Strategic Joint Planning Staff of the Ministry of Defence, 1941 - 1944. His last appointment in the Royal Navy was Director of Naval Intelligence, 1951-1954. He later worked with the International Department of the British Council of Churches, and was a member of the World and the British Councils of Churches' Commissions studying defence and disarmament. He was one of the founder members of the Institute for Strategic Studies and was on the Disarmament Panel set up by Lord Chalfont, Minister of State for Disarmament, in the 1960s.
