Scope and Contents

Primarily papers and correspondence from Porteous' service as an Artificer in the Royal Navy, including assorted technical diagrams and papers on developing plane tracking systems.

Items throughout the collection have been annotated by Roger Porteous with dates of creation and creators of documents (eg whose handwriting a letter is in), understood to have been done c. 2018-2020.

Biographical / Historical

Iville Porteous, 14 February 1905 – 21 May 1970. Enrolled 14/2/1923, discharged to Commission 31/12/1936, Comissioned 1/1/37 . Commission relinquished March 1952 due to ill health. Research Engineer, S. Smith & Sons Ltd, 1955-1967.

Apprentice training H.M.S. Fisgard until 1925. H.M.S. Excellent 1926. H.M.S. Revenge 1926-7. H.M.S. Suffolk, China Fleet 1928-30. H.M.S. Hoos, 1931, Home Waters. H.M.S. Excellent 1932. H.M.S. Suffolk, China Fleet, 1933-35. H.M.S. Repulse, Mediterranean, 1936. H.M.S. Southampton 1937-38. H.M.S Gloucester 1938-40. H.M.S. Figi, 1940. H.M.S. Mauritius, 1940-42. Subsequently joined Admiralty Naval Ordanance Department; then Naval Intelligence Division 1949-51.

The Archives Centre retains a copy of the catalogue of the material prepared by Roger Porteous in c. 2020 when writing his memoir (PORT AS/1)

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The papers were given to Churchill Archvies Centre by Iville Porteous' son, Commander Roger Porteous, and his wife Liz Porteous, in 2021.

The papers were previously arranged by Roger Porteous when writing his memoir 'From Fellside to Flyplane', which can be found under PORT/AS. Roger Porteous' catalogue has been retained, but no longer reflects the current arrangement of the material.
