From the Series:

Many files relate to ‘The Second World War’ and include correspondence with WSC’s literary assistants (William Deakin and Denis Kelly), Henry Pownall (military consultant), George Gordon Allen (naval consultant) and other consultants including Hastings Ismay and Isaiah Berlin. Also includes war-time documents which were source material for ‘The Second World War’.

The Churchill archive is freely available in our reading rooms and onsite at Churchill College (via the Churchill College wireless network). Researchers can download images of documents directly from churchillarchive.com and so are encouraged to consider bringing a laptop or other device for this purpose. For conservation reasons, the fragile originals are no longer issued to researchers.

This digital edition is open to researchers unless otherwise marked in the catalogue. Some material has been closed by the Cabinet Office or by Churchill Archives Centre in accordance with data protection legislation.

Extracts and some full copies of the telegrams and letters (except telegrams from WSC to Roosevelt, 7 Jan and 28 Feb 1940, a report of naval actions off Montevideo, and a telegram from Roosevelt to WSC, 6 Mar 1940) are published in 'Winston S. Churchill' volume VI 'Finest Hour 1939-1941' by Martin Gilbert, pp.52-54, 63, 97, 146 and 289.

Almost all the telegrams and letters (except an attachment of a report of naval actions off Montevideo) are published in 'The Churchill Documents' volume 14 'At the Admiralty September 1939-May 1940' by Martin Gilbert, pp.76, 211-212, 246-247, 559-560, 615, 703-704, 713-714, 818, 853 and 1222.
