Scope and Contents

Subjects include the need to win the hearts and minds of local populations to win wars; the system of governance in Malaya; the importance of intelligence; guerrilla leaders having been driven into the jungle by the threat of registration and detention without trial; structure of the guerrilla organisation; control of villages in Malaya [creation of internment camps]; challenges of counter insurgency in the jungle; the creation and use of agents; control of food supplies; employment of British civil servants in independent Malaya; clearance area-by-area of communist guerrillas and discrediting communism within the Malayan population; and building of army forts which provided a centre with services for subsistence farmers in the deep jungle.

The lecture is followed by questions on ambushes, the use of armoured wheeled vehicles, increases in pay for army employees in Malaya, and the problem of external aid to guerrilla organisations.
