Scope and Contents

Subjects include mistrust of governments and authorities by local populations in Southeast Asia, family structures and Confucian philosophy, conflict between older and younger generations in Chinese families, lack of local administration leaving space for communism and the need for effective administration as a counter insurgency measure, training of administrators in Malaya to fill the gap left by British administrators, the need for an effective civil service and police force to fight communism, intensive research into the mentality of communists and of local populations based on captured documents, communists using an anti-Imperialist image, communist elites being mainly from the middle class and frustrated intellectuals, and intelligence gathering and difficulties in translating captured documents.
