Subjects include: a visit to Scotland; ELS’s distress for Nancy during the bombing of London; his relations with General Charles de Gaulle [Chief of Free French]; the failure of the landings at Dakar [Senegal]; difficulties at the Syrian conference in Cairo [Egypt]; personal tensions with General Sir Archibald Wavell [Commander-in-Chief, Middle East]; ELS's frustration at his situation; MS being confined to hospital; de Gaulle’s reaction to the British terms for the armistice with the Vichy forces; ELS’s excellent relationship with Oliver Lyttelton [Minister of State in the Middle East, later 1st Lord Chandos]; negotiations in Syria; his view of "Jumbo", General Sir Henry Wilson [Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces in Syria]; ELS’s feelings at whether to return to London with de Gaulle. Also includes a diary account sent to Nancy of ELS’s experiences travelling in Egypt and on safari and visiting a mine [? in Kenya in 1934].
