Scope and Contents

Journal kept by ELS and MS while ELS was Head of the British Military Mission in Paris, also including: telegrams from MS to ELS from St Jean de Luz on subjects including her distress [following a miscarriage] and assuring him of her affection; ELS's letter of appointment as Brigadier-General; a letter from ELS to Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice [Director of Military Operations, Imperial General Staff] on attempts by General Sir Henry Wilson, Chief of General Staff and Marshal Ferdinand Foch to have him replaced, particularly on Foch's hostility towards him; a letter from Lord Robert Cecil [Assistant Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, later 1st Lord Cecil of Chelwood] to Francis Bennett-Goldney on difficulties in ELS's and MS's marriage; a telegram and letter from Wilson warning ELS that their conversation (on ELS's fear that he would be replaced) was confidential and then assuring him that he would not move him; a letter from ELS to Major-General Sir George Macdonogh [Director of Military Intelligence] on strikes at St Etienne; a letter from Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice on his recollections of the German advance in 1914 and asking about French reaction to his public criticism of war policy; letters from ELS to Wilson on subjects including French policy towards Romania and the Balkans, the situation in Alsace-Lorraine and American fears that the German army might break the peace.
