British Pugwash Group, 1961 - 2005

Scope and Contents

The records include records of the British Advisory Committee (predecessor to the Group proper, which was founded in 1963) and of the British Pugwash Trust (founded as a charitable Trust in 1987 with responsibility for the Group’s finances). There are also records relating to the British Pugwash Group’s campaigning and publication activities including records of public meetings, workshops and seminars and similar activities not falling under the umbrella of the Pugwash central organisation.

The archives include papers relating to the British Pugwash Advisory Committee, predecessor to the Group proper (RTBT 5/6/1); minutes of meetings of the Group and of its Executive Committee (RTBT 5/6/2 and RTBT 5/6/3) and papers relating to the British Pugwash Trust (RTBT 5/6/4). There is also much material relating to the activities of the Group from the 1960s until 2005, including correspondence, papers relating to public meetings and events, and papers relating to research projects undertaken by the group (RTBT 5/6/5, RTBT 5/6/6/, RTBT 5/6/7 and RTBT 5/6/8). RTBT 5/6/5/29 - 30 are records of the celebrations organised by the Group to mark Joseph Rotblat’s 90th birthday. RTBT 5/6/9 is an additional group of material relating to the Group which was received after cataloguing of the main series was complete and RTBT 5/6/10 is papers relating to the Group which were identified after cataloguing of the main series was complete.

Biographical / Historical

Like other national Pugwash groups (for which see RTBT 5/5), the British Pugwash Group was a membership organisation sharing the aims of the wider Pugwash movement.
