Biographical / Historical
Born in October 1906, Sir Folliott Herbert Sandford was a British civil servant and Registrar of the University of Oxford from 1958-1972.
He joined the Air Ministry as a civil servant in 1930, working as Principal Private Secretary between 1937 and 1940. During this time he served a number of Secretaries of State for Air, including Sir Samuel Hoare and Sir Archibald Sinclair.
He held a number of positions in the civil service, travelling to Canada and West Africa before returning to the Air Ministry in 1944, rising to become Deputy Under-Secretary of State.
Once retired, he became a fellow of New College and Wolfson College, Oxford, before taking over as Registrar of the University.
He died in October 1986, aged 79
