Drafts on German history, 1895-08 - 1914-08
Scope and Contents
Annotated drafts for a history of 19th century Germany. This may be for works that JWHM was commissioned to write for the Cambridge Historical Series in 1895 and 1901 and never finished, but it may also relate to "A short history of Germany and her colonies" (1914), written by JWHM with Walter Alison Philips, and Arthur William Holland as part of the 11th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Subjects include: the Prussian constitution and the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819; the Zollverein customs union of the 1830s; Metternich and the eve of the [1848] revolution; Bavarian policy; the origins of the German Confederation of 1815.
