Scope and Contents

Papers, press cuttings, and correspondence, on subjects including: Czechoslovakia [now Czech Republic and Slovakia] crisis and the Munich agreement; National Service; colonies and mandated territories; trade; the British Army and Navy, and immigration. Includes: letters to Lloyd from the journalist Ian Colvin in Berlin, with reports on the situation there and news of Hitler's actions and possible intentions; letters from Colvin and [?]Johnstone passing on information from an unnamed 'friend' in Berlin; letter from Lloyd to Lord Halifax [Edward Wood, earlier Lord Irwin, later 1st Earl of Halifax] arguing against a Four Power conference leading to a plebiscite on the Sudetenland [12 Sept 1938]; note from Lloyd to Lord Gort recounting conversation with Gammelin concerning possible Italian attack on Egypt; summary for MPs on government action regarding Czechoslovakia, and copy of letter from Gillian z Lobkowicz, resident of Czechoslovakia, to Lady Milner, describing the situation there [1 Oct 1938]. Also includes: 'A Plea for the British Army' by E. Beddington Behrens; note on Portugese and Spanish foreign policy sent to Lloyd by Katharine, Duchess of Atholl; memorandum on convoys by Dr [?]Resinski; draft article sent by Lloyd to Lord Camrose [editor of the Daily Telegraph] on the subject of immigration with proposal for its publication [declined], and account of conversations with the King of Greece [March 1939].
