Scope and Contents

This is the final scrapbook made by Eleanor Brett, Viscountess Esher, and is the most sparsely populated out of all the volumes. She notes at the beginning of the volume how she did not keep a detailed diary after 1918, so the dates included ‘are only a few dates of interest’. The book largely revolves around recording her social and travel arrangements from 1919-1920.

Contents include: a letter addressed to Miss Hackett [Norah Desmond Hackett] on 29 January 1919, co-founder of the Hackett-Lowther Ambulance, which includes the foreword for Hackett’s book; short reflections on social visits, such as visiting a theatre for the first time since 1914; a photograph of a pearl necklace, made out of pearls derived from other necklaces and sold by the Red Cross; a newspaper article detailing the founding of the Hackett-Lowther Unit mentioning Eleanor’s involvement; a series of cartoons concerning a muffled dog; invitation to the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace [London]; short reflections on the peace celebrations and the impact of railway strikes; newspaper clippings reporting on the rehabilitation work of soldiers who were blinded as a result of war; a photograph of her daughter Sylvia, Ranee of Sarawak [Malaysia] with her husband [Charles Brooke]; a letter from the ‘De Secours Aux Blessés Militaries’ awarding Eleanor a commemorative medal for caring for the wounded in France; a postcard signed by the French boxer George Carpentier; a signed postcard from G.H.Q [General Headquarters which co-ordinated British and Indian troops during the First World War] dated Christmas 1919; newspaper clippings of poems by Siegfried Sassoon and the proposed Gallipoli Memorial; and a letter dated September 1920 concerning the awarding of the Medal of the "Reconnaissance Française" by the French President in recognition of her [Eleanor's] devoted services in the work of the French Red Cross’.
