Scope and Contents

Like other scrapbooks in the series, Eleanor combines reflections on her own experiences of the war in typed diary entries, with military battles which she notes on small pieces of paper on the right-hand side of her volume. She illustrates her scrapbooks with postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings, illustrations, letters, and signatures of people she has met; letters, and ephemera.

In her diary entries Eleanor reflects on: visiting Compiegne [France]; visiting outskirts of Noyon [France] previously occupied by Germans and difficult journey; making ribbon hats with Frances Phipps; hosting Captain Cohn, [Norah Desmond] Hackett and [Toupie] Lowther; having lunch with the Women’s Emergency Corps; Sylvia [daughter] suffering from blood poisoning; visiting Nointel [France], home of Reginald’s great-aunt; meeting [Norah Desmond] Hackett; visiting German burial ground near Noyon; being given permit to travel through German lines to see German trenches; observations on flowers in No Man’s Land; visiting Canteen run by Hackett at Blerincourt [France]; collecting objects from German trenches; visiting Forest of Compiegne; visiting Place Vendome; supporting [Norah Desmond] Hackett and [Toupie] Lowther to set up Hackett-Lowther Unit after Lowther’s dismissal; supporting villagers in Compiegne [France] as they returned to their houses; experiencing air raids; French felling of trees; visiting Chamant [France] on [Hackett-Lowther] Unit business and reflections on Hackett’s actions; making friends with Miss Gray whose family had connections with her mother; travelling to Biarritz [France]; shopping in Biarritz.
