Including learning to fly an Avro 504 and a Bristol Fighter at the RAF Staff College in Andover, 1925-6; fox hunting at his family home in Yorkshire and later in Fife; a posting to the Air Ministry Air Staff as the intelligence officer for the Middle East, 1926-8; volunteering on the railways at King's Cross station during the General Strike; an undercover visit to Turkey travelling out on the Orient Express and back on a French commercial airline; an undercover visit to the oilfields at Abadan in Persia [Iran] abandoned in Baghdad and Basra [Iraq] because of security concerns; quarantine on the return journey in Oman because of a cholera outbreak in Baghdad; promotion to Squadron Leader and a posting to RAF Leuchars, 1928-30; socialising with local elite families in Fife and meeting his future wife, Katharine, in their social circle; and a posting to Malta, 1930.
