Correspondence regarding false claims that Robert Winston was part of the team that created the first IVF baby (Louise Brown) in Physiology News and The Times newspaper, 2003-03-14 - 2003-09-17

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0014/EDWS 1/3/48

Scope and Contents

Comprising: apology letters regarding claims in Physiology News from Bill Winslow (editor of Physiology News) and Dafydd Walters (chairman of the Executive Committee of the Physiological Society); emails between Bill Winslow, Bill Parry and Caroline Blackwell regarding the source of false claims in Physiology News; and emails between Edwards and Brian Setchell about a Times newspaper article claiming that Robert Winston was part of the team that delivered Louise Brown.
Also includes press cuttings of two articles: 'Is there a right age for treatment?' by Robert Winston "IVF pioneer" (undated) and 'Doctor says he has cloned baby' about Panos Zavros who ran a clinic in Kentucky claiming to have an early-stage cloned human embryo in frozen storage. The article on cloning attributes Edwards' work as leading to the birth of the first IVF baby, and claims that Edwards supported Zavros' work on cloning.
