Subjects include: differences in policy between Duff Cooper and Sir Edward Spears [former First Minister to Republics of Syria and the Lebanon] over Spears’s policy of helping the Arab states drive out the French; a suggestion that Prince Napoleon might marry Mary Churchill [later Mary Soames]; official recognition of the French authorities in North Africa; difficulties with a possible visit to Roosevelt [President of the United States] by de Gaulle [President of the Provisional Government of the French Republic] after the fall of General Henri Giraud [former Commander-in-Chief of French forces in North Africa]; the role of the French Committee of National Liberation in operation Overlord [the invasion of Normandy] and operation Anvil [invasion of the south of France] and their demands for part of the Italian fleet.
