Biographical / Historical
David Gillmore was born 16 August 1934, the son of Air Vice-Marshal A. D. Gillmore. He was educated at Trent College, then King’s College, Cambridge (MA); in 1964, he married Lucile Morin.
He began his career at Reuters Limited, 1958-60, moving on to become Assistant to the Director-General of, Polypapier, SA, Paris, 1960-65 and a teacher at the ILEA, 1965-69. In 1970 he joined the Diplomatic Service, and his postings included: Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1970-72; First Secretary, Moscow [Soviet Union], 1972-75; Counsellor, UK Delegation, Vienna [Austria], 1975-78; Head of Defence Department, FCO, 1979-81; Assistant Under Secretary of State, FCO, 1981-83; High Commissioner in Malaysia, 1983-86; Deputy Under-Secretary of State, FCO, 1986-90.
He was awarded the GCMG in 1994 (KCMG 1990; CMG 1982). He died in 1998.
