Biographical / Historical
John Hickman was born 3 July 1927, the son of the late J. B. Hickman and Joan Hickman; he married Jennifer Love in 1956. Hickman was educated at Tonbridge, then Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
He served in the Royal Artillery, 45th Field Regiment, Commonwealth Brigade, 1948-50. He entered the War Office in 1950 as Assistant Principal, becoming Principal in 1955. Hickman then transferred to the CRO, in 1958, becoming: First Secretary in Wellington, New Zealand, 1959-62, Spain, 1966-7; Consul-General, Bilbao, 1967-9; Deputy High Commissioner, Singapore, 1969-71; Counsellor (later Chargé d'Affaires) Ireland, 1974-7; Ambassador to Ecuador, 1977-80, Chile, 1982-7.
He was awarded the CMG in 1971 and died in 2001.
