Scope and Contents

Papers, correspondence and cuttings on Churchill receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature, and Clementine's visit with Mary Soames [earlier Mary Churchill] to Stockholm, Sweden, to receive the prize on Churchill's behalf. Correspondents include: 1st Lord Bracken on investing the prize money (2); King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden (2); [Charles] Evelyn Shuckburgh [Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary], enclosing a despatch from Roger Stevens, British Ambassador to Sweden, on the success of the visit; Roger Stevens, suggesting that it would be a good idea for Churchill to write to the Swedish Academy and Nobel Foundation himself; [Anders] Nils Ståhle, Chief Executive of the Nobel Foundation (4).

Also includes: press statements on the visit; a note on the other prize winners for 1953; draft and text of the speech given by Clementine; translation of a speech given by the novelist and poet Sigfrid Siwertz.
