Letters to Clementine from [John] Jock Colville [Joint Principal Private Secretary to Churchill] during his trip to the United States with Churchill, on subjects including: their journey out to the United States and Canada, December 1951, commenting that he'd never heard anyone talk such rot as 1st Lord Mountbatten [4th Sea Lord] about foreign affairs, and also on the good spirits of [Robert] Anthony Eden [Foreign Secretary, later 1st Lord Avon]; plans for the visit and general American attitudes to it; the contrast with Churchill's former dealings with the Americans during the war, on an equal footing; Churchill's speech to Congress, January 1952; the success of the talks, particularly on steel supplies; friction between Churchill and Eden over a statement by Churchill on China and the Far East; the visit to Ottawa and the good impression made by General Sir Gerald Templer; the success of Churchill's speech at the Canadian Government banquet; Colville's own liking for Canada; the success of the speech to the US Congress; talks on the Supreme Commander for the Atlantic; Churchill's view of the 1st Sea Lord [Admiral Sir Rhoderick McGrigor].
