Scope and Contents
Letter from Sir James Masterton-Smith [Assistant Secretary (Additional), War Office and Air Ministry] to Churchill on his view that Sir Herbert Creedy should succeed Sir Reginald Brade as the next Secretary of the War Office, rather than Masterton-Smith himself, and on his future outside the Civil Service, 1919; and one from Churchill to Masterton-Smith [when he was Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies], December 1921, on negotiations over the Anglo-Irish Treaty and Churchill's appointment as Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on defence estimates, charged with carrying out cuts recommended by the Geddes Report.
