Scope and Contents

Subjects include: Churchill's visit to Italy, August 1944; viewing the front off the south coast of France ['Operation Anvil']; differences between the Americans and British over strategy; the rude response by General Charles de Gaulle [President of Provisional Government of the French Republic and Head Chief of Armies] to Churchill's suggestion of a meeting and Churchill's view that Gaullist France would be hostile to Britain; meetings with Josip Tito [Marshal of Yugoslavia]; Allied advances in northern France; the importance of Octagon [the second Quebec Conference] for settling the divisions between the British and American Staffs; the mishandling of British forces under American command, particularly in Burma [later Myanmar]; the refusal by the Soviets to help the people of Warsaw or to allow the Americans to help them; Churchill's visit to Moscow [Soviet Union], October 1944 and the success of the talks on the Balkans; trying to get a settlement for Poland; Churchill's view of Stalin; going to Athens, and Churchill's speech to the Embassy staff, December 1944; a plot to blow up the British headquarters at the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens; making friends with Archbishop Damaskinos [Regent of Greece]; a dramatic conference between the various Greek parties.

Also includes a letter from 'Jock' John Colville [Assistant Private Secretary to Churchill] to John Martin [Principal Private Secretary to Churchill] on Churchill's visit to Greece, December 1944, particularly: the flight there; meeting Georgios Papandreou [Prime Minister of Greece] and Archbishop Damaskinos; the attitude of the troops towards ELAS [The Greek People's Liberation Army]; talks between the parties.
