Sir Winston Churchill's letters to Lady Churchill, 1941-09, 1941-12
Scope and Contents
Letter from Churchill to Clementine begun in December 1941 while he was at sea aboard HMS Duke of York and ended from the White House, while he was visiting President Franklin Roosevelt after the United States entered the war. Subjects include: the difficulty of the journey; bad news from Hong Kong and Malaya [later Malaysia], with Allied forces retreating to defend Singapore; the sinking of a number of U-boats off Gibraltar; the successful advance of General Sir Claude Auchinleck [Commander-in-Chief Middle East] in Libya and the importance of showing the Americans a British victory; the magnificence of the Americans' breadth of view.
Also includes a letter from Churchill to Mary Churchill [later Mary Soames], September 1941, sending his love and telling her how interested he has been in all her cheery letters.
