Subjects include: Randolph Churchill's campaign in the Ross and Cromarty by-election; Churchill's stay in Morocco, January 1936; the Italian failures in Abyssinia [later Ethiopia] and Churchill's wish that Sir [Joseph] Austen Chamberlain had been made Foreign Secretary instead of [Robert] Anthony Eden [later 1st Lord Avon] whom he viewed as a lightweight; the happiness of Diana Sandys [earlier Diana Churchill and Diana Bailey] with Duncan Sandys; a visit to Thami El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakech; splits in the Cabinet over Germany and the likelihood of German forces remilitarising the Rhineland; the collapse of the London Naval Conference and the probability that Germany and Japan were working together; the success of Churchill's painting; meeting Vic Oliver and his wish to marry Sarah Churchill [later Sarah Oliver, Sarah Beauchamp and Sarah, Lady Audley]; the determination of Stanley Baldwin [Prime Minister] to keep Churchill out of the Cabinet; the death of Jupiter, one of the swans; finding a place at Liverpool Repertory Theatre for Sarah; the possibility of Churchill being appointed Minister for Co-ordination of Defence and his determination to work for peace if he were to be appointed; a stay with Maxine Elliott in the south of France, September 1936, painting the river Loup and the harbour at St Jean Cap Ferrat and writing more articles for the News of the World; the Spanish Civil War and Churchill's support for the Nationalist side; the treatment of the Jews in Germany; watching the French army manoeuvres at Aix en Provence; plans for a series of speeches in the United States in January 1937 following a large tax bill and the need to retrench at Chartwell [Kent]; "the Cornwall plan" [Churchill's idea for a morganatic marriage between King Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor, and Wallis Simpson, where she became Duchess of Cornwall].
