Scope and Contents

Subjects include: Churchill's wish to send Clementine and the children out of London, because of the risk of Zeppelin raids; visit to France for talks on munitions supplies, February 1918; returning to see his old military position at 'Plugstreet' [Ploegsteert, Belgium], the Ypres salient, Glencorse Wood and Polygon Wood; the success of Jack [John S Churchill]; a meeting with Lieutenant-General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston; visit to headquarters in France, March 1918 [during the German Spring Offensive], including touring the positions with 'the old man' [Georges Clemenceau, Prime Minister of France]; warning Clementine to quarantine the nanny Isabelle on her return; flying to France, June 1918; the danger to Paris; flying to France, August 1918, and visiting the front near Verchocq; seeing German prisoners of war; the need to improve shell design; Allied victories; plans for finding a house in London; a meeting of the Inter-Allied Munitions Council in Paris, August 1918; a plan for supplying the American 3rd Army with steel, engines and guns; establishing relations with Edward Stettinius, representative of the United States War Department; frustration at the failure to complete the Anglo-American tank factory at Chateauroux; concerns about lack of manpower provision; a visit to France, September 1918 and Churchill's pleasure in flying; low morale amongst the Germans; the desolation of the front and the distress of 'the Canary' [Churchill's pilot, Cyril Patteson]; their 10th wedding anniversary; plans for the use of mustard gas; supplies of artillery for the Americans and aircraft engines for the Royal Air Force; Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig [Commander-in-Chief]'s appreciation of the tanks and Churchill's share in developing them; campaigning during the General Election in Dundee [Scotland], November 1918; Churchill's view of [David] D C Thomson, Managing Director of the Dundee Courier and Advertiser; Churchill's sympathy for the hard time being suffered by Herbert Asquith [later 1st Lord Oxford and Asquith].

Also includes: a later explanatory note from Clementine on the death of their nanny Isabelle from influenza [in 1919]; copy of a telegram from Haig, August 1918, thanking Churchill for his congratulations and for the energy and foresight which he had shown as Minister of Munitions.
