Scope and Contents
Subjects include: Churchill's flight to Malta [on his way to the Yalta Conference], January 1945; searching for a new house in London [28 Hyde Park Gate]; the suspense of the D-Day landings; Mary Churchill [later Mary Soames]'s ATS [Auxiliary Territorial Service] battery firing at V-1 rockets; Clementine's difficult relationship with Randolph Churchill; the rudeness of General Charles de Gaulle; visits to Chequers [Buckinghamshire], including one from Henry Morgenthau, Secretary of the United States Treasury; news from Washington via 1st Lord Beaverbrook [earlier Max Aitken], particularly of Harry Hopkins [Special Adviser and Assistant to President Roosevelt] being improved in health but having difficulties in his marriage; 'Jock' John Colville [Assistant Private Secretary to Churchill] having an eye infection; the success of the campaign in Europe; warning Churchill not to talk about the Communists in Greece using women and children as human shields.
Also includes Clementine's typescript diary, September 1944, from the Second Quebec Conference [Octagon], particularly relating to: Churchill's health; their journey to Quebec [Canada]; Clementine's broadcast with Eleanor Roosevelt; various social events; a visit to the Roosevelts at Hyde Park, including meeting the Duke of Windsor [earlier King Edward VIII] and Harry Hopkins, and destroying a sketch of Churchill by Paul Maze in the President's museum.
