Photograph of a portrait of WSC as MP for Oldham [by George William Fish], 1900-08 - 1947-08
Scope and Contents
Half length photograph of a portrait of WSC sitting at his desk, in an ornately carved chair [which was a family heirloom, though the print is too dark to make it out clearly]. He is directly facing the painter, unsmiling, his right arm resting on a heap of papers on the desk in front of him, with his signet ring clearly visible. WSC is wearing a dark jacket and waistcoat with a wing collar and spotted bow tie; there are various ornaments on the desk, including a metal or glass vase and a small basket.
[The original portrait is in the Gallery Oldham, and was donated to the Oldham Corporation Art Gallery in 1902 by R F Ware, the Oldham Conservative Association's Organizing Secretary and Registration Agent. It seems likely that it was commissioned by the Association following WSC's election as MP for Oldham in 1900; WSC is known to have liked it, as he asked for it to be photographed in 1947.]
