"The Prime Minister receives the Freedom of the City of London at the Guildhall", 1943-06-30 - 1944-11-30
Scope and Contents
Black and white photograph of a painting by Frank Salisbury, showing the Chamberlain of the City, Sir Adrian Pollock, handing a casket containing the Certificate of Freedom [the casket was made from damaged roof timbers from the Guildhall] to WSC. They are standing beside a table bearing the City mace and sword, while the Lord Mayor, Sir Samuel Joseph, stands beside WSC, with one hand resting on the table. Rows of City dignitaries are sitting in the background, and to the right are sitting various others including [?] Diana Sandys [earlier Diana Churchill and Diana Bailey] and CSC, both in dark dresses and hats, and William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury, and 1st Lord Simon, Lord Chancellor, both in their official robes. Others behind them include Mary Churchill [later Mary Soames], Sarah Oliver [earlier Sarah Churchill, later Sarah Beauchamp and Sarah, Lady Audley], [Robert] Anthony Eden [Foreign Secretary, later 1st Lord Avon], Clement Attlee [Deputy Prime Minister] and 10th Duke of Marlborough. The photograph shows the painting in its original form; shortly after it was painted, the Library Committee of the Guildhall asked Salisbury to change it to reflect what happened in the actual ceremony, so that in the final work the casket is on the table, while Pollock extends his hand to WSC instead.
