Scope and Contents
Group photograph of WSC with officers of the French 33rd Corps, on the French front line near Arras during the First World War. WSC is standing in the centre of the group, in uniform, carrying a cane and wearing a steel "poilu" helmet [given to him by the French]; to his left, in the dark jacket, is General Emile Fayolle, commander of the 33rd Corps; third from the left of the group, wearing a cap, is Captain Edward Spiers [later Edward Spears, liaison officer with the French], and just visible behind Fayolle's shoulder is a German prisoner.
