Scope and Contents

Economic affairs: Budget speculation intensifies as the General Election approaches, in particular concerning taxation; controversy over the issue of Irish loyalist compensation; the rejection, by the new Socialist administration, of unsatisfactory reparations offers.

Foreign Policy: Trouble in Palestine; unease in Europe, especially concerning the ‘Danzig corridor’; WSC protests against the government’s policy towards India, highlighting his disapproval by refusing to involve himself with the ‘India Committee’ which will discuss the future of British government in India; conference with Mahatma Gandhi to be held; dispute between China and Japan.

Career: continued criticism of socialist ideals, despite the forfeiture of his cabinet position as a result of the Socialist’s election victory; plays no part in the Shadow Cabinet; WSC embarks on a ‘restful’ trip to Canada, managing to discuss both Empire trade and American/British naval disarmament; WSC issues a warning concerning Germany’s increasingly fervent nationalism; WSC becomes animated over his omission, along with some prominent contemporaries, from the BBC’s ‘Politics on Radio’.
