This section principally consists of the contents of Bagnold's large map cabinet and includes maps relating to his First World War service in France and Belgium, his explorations in North Africa and the Middle East (the 1932 expedition in particular) and the LRDG.

Biographical / Historical

Bagnold was posted to the 83rd Field Company, Royal Engineers in July 1915. The unit was posted to the Ypres salient in the autumn of 1915 and to the Somme in July 1916. At the end of 1916 Bagnold joined the signals branch of the Royal Engineers. In spring 1917 he was posted to the 19th Corps Signals in Ypres, where he spent the rest of the war.
