Correspondents on mountain troops and cadets' mountaineering courses include: Sir Samuel Hoare [later 1st Lord Templewood] on sending forces to Finland; Lord Halifax [Foreign Secretary, earlier Edward Wood and Lord Irwin] on allowing volunteers to go to Finland; Francis Smythe on subjects including training in Canada (8); [Sydney] Bryan Donkin, secretary of the Alpine Club pre-service advisory sub-committee, on mountain warfare training (11); Noel Odell; 1st Lord Bridgeman, Directorate Home Guard and Territorial Army; G M Bartrum (10); General Sir Harold Alexander [Commander-in-Chief, Allied Armies in Italy] on bringing Francis Smythe in to help with his training school; Sir [Percy] James Grigg, Secretary of State for War, on courses for cadets; Major-General Robert Money on a training school in India (3); Major-General John Whitaker [Director of Military Training, War Office] (3); Sir Archibald Sinclair, Secretary of State for Air [later 1st Lord Thurso]; General Sir Claude Auchinleck, Commander-in-Chief in India on subjects including post-war training in India (2); Edward Altham, Editor of the Royal United Service Institution; Geoffrey Young (2); Henry Tyndale, Editor of the Alpine Journal; Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke, Chief of Imperial General Staff [later 1st Lord Alanbrooke] on retaining training staff following the closure of the Mountain Schools at the end of the war; Thomas Brocklebank, Chief Instructor at the Llanberis school (3); Major-General Francis Tuker.
