Scope and Contents

Correspondence and papers received by LSA as a school governor, mainly consisting of correspondence with Paul Vellacott (Headmaster, 1934-39), [Arthur] Paul Boissier (Headmaster, 1940-42) and Ralph Moore (Headmaster, 1942-53). Other correspondents include: [Frederick] Nugent Hicks on the difficult relationship between Geoffrey Woolley [Assistant Master and Chaplain of Harrow] and Vellacott (2); Cyril Norwood [former Headmaster of Harrow]; Geoffrey Woolley (3); Francis Pember [school governor] (13); Sir Edward Grigg [Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for War, later 1st Lord Altrincham] on the use of the school parade ground by an anti-aircraft battery; Herbert Morrison [Minister of Supply]; 1st Lord Vansittart [Chief Diplomatic Adviser to Foreign Secretary] on the secondment of a Housemaster, Eric Gannon, to the Foreign Office Political Intelligence Department (2); Arthur Pickard-Cambridge [school governor] (2); [Robert] Anthony Eden [Foreign Secretary] on the necessity of keeping Gannon in the Foreign Office; Eric Gannon on seeking compensation for having to resign from Harrow (10); [Edward] Malcolm Venables [Housemaster]; Malcolm McCorquodale [Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Labour and National Service] on the enforced retirement of older masters, while masters of service age were retained (2); John Hills [Head Master of Bradfield College] declining to put his name forward for the Headmastership; 9th Lord Bessborough [earlier Lord Duncannon] on falling standards at Harrow; Dorian Williams (2); 9th Lord Cobham [Chairman of Council of Country Territorial Associations, earlier John Lyttelton] on air raid shelters at Harrow.
