Scope and Contents
Correspondents include: Winston Churchill, Prime Minister, on the Basic English Cabinet committee (includes notes on the committee and notes of evidence), and enclosing a letter from the Chief of Air Staff [Sir Charles Portal] on Amery's accusation that Britain was weak in transport aircraft; Sir Stephen Tallents, enclosing his article on English as a common language; General Sir Alan Brooke, Chief of Imperial General Staff [later 1st Lord Alanbrooke] on Amery's view of Britain's weakness in transport aircraft (3); Clement Attlee on talks about air transport (2); Sir Charles Portal, Chief of Air Staff, on airborne forces; Field Marshal Sir John Dill, Chief of Imperial General Staff, on Amery's request for more airborne divisions for India.
Also includes: note by Amery on progress in his talks about Army air requirements; memorandum by Lieutenant General Sir Henry Pownall, Vice-Chief of Imperial General Staff, on Amery's request for airborne divisions for India.
