Scope and Contents
Diary covering Cadogan's move from London to Peking after his formal appointment to the Chinese legation in January 1934, and his first impressions of China. Subjects covered include: his knighting as KCMG at Sandringham; his journey to China on a ship; British and Chinese relations with Manchukuo [Manchuria, China] [seized by Japan in 1931 following the Mukden Incident] and with Japan generally; the Burma [later Myanmar]-Yunnan frontier and relations with Chiang-Kai Shek, as well as social and family events.
