Scope and Contents

Working papers on politics in Britain, covering subjects such as election campaigns in the UK and the USA; Labour Party, Liberal Party, and Conservative Party policies; politicians including Hugh Gaitskell and Harold Macmillan; opinion polling; the interaction between voting behaviour and class, education, generational factors, social mobility, and leisure habits; ideological currents surrounding socialism and conservatism in British political culture; and the role of intellectuals in society. Consists largely of press cuttings, articles, and survey data, with Mark Abrams's notes. Includes drafts of Mark Abrams's papers "Social Class and British Politics" (n.d.) and "Changing Class Patterns" (Fabian Society Autumn Lecture, 1960); and research papers by North American sociologists including Paul Lazarsfeld. Also includes draft notes for a proposal for a Research Services Ltd. survey of 'Political Attitudes in Britain', especially on "the nature of support by working-class electors for the Conservative Party".
