Scope and Contents
Working papers on consumption and the retail and distributive trades in Britain, Europe, and the USA, covering subjects such as ownership of durable and non-durable consumer goods; fashion and taste; class, incomes, working hours, and living standards; hire purchase schemes and consumer credit; department stores; multiples and chain stores; mail-order catalogues; self-service grocery shops; co-operative shops and societies; and consumer protection. Consists largely of press cuttings, articles, and survey data, with Mark Abrams's notes. Includes drafts of Mark Abrams's articles "Owners of Durable Consumer Goods" (1957), "Chain Store Management" (1959), "Consumer Education and Protection" (1959), "Credit Buying and the Textile Trade" (1959), and "Household Income and Expenditure" (n.d.).
