Diary covering Charles Peake’s time from 2nd December 1956 to 5th April 1957 when he worked as British Ambassador to Athens.
Subjects covered include: work on departmental papers for the Colonial Policy Committee (CPC); discussions with colleagues on Cyprus constitutional affairs; Anthony Eden’s difficulties in re-establishing relationships with the White House [in the post-Suez era]; meeting of the CPC; addressing CPC at Downing Street; meeting colleagues at Brooks’s Club; dislike for self-righteousness of the Labour party; travelling to Hatfield for a meeting and touring grounds of Hatfield House; attending Cabinet meetings; meeting with the Minister of State at the Foreign Office; discussions in the House of Commons and Cabinet about [Lord] Radcliffe’s proposals [concerning the Constitution for Cyprus]; tensions between his daughters. Also includes a newspaper clipping reporting on Peake’s leave.
