Scope and Contents
Set of nearly 2000 prints, from over 200 images (with a small number of American official photographs and press images as well), showing the build-up to the Normandy landings, the operation itself and the days immediately following. Includes photographs of King George VI inspecting the troops and visiting the beaches, and photographs of Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay [Allied Naval Commander-in-Chief, Expeditionary Force] (one with Ramsay, General Dwight Eisenhower [Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force in Western Europe] and Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery [Commander-in-Chief British Group of Armies and Allied Armies, Northern France]).
Also includes: a small number of general naval images from December 1944, including new fast cargo ships, the presentation of an album of naval war photographs to Winston Churchill for his 70th birthday, various warships and a home-made sextant which saved a group of sailors; a set of prints from Admiral Ramsay’s funeral, January 1945.
