Source material includes: notes by 1st Lord Moran [earlier Charles Wilson] on the National Health Service, national unity and peace through strength, the tone of WSC's election broadcast, rearmament, Labour attempts to take credit for the Welfare State, and unemployment; notes by [?] Christopher Soames on pensioners' earnings, taxation, and the dropping of nationalization by the Labour Party; galley proofs from ["The Second World War"] of directives by WSC, 1943 - 44, on not raising false hopes about post-war conditions, on the Beveridge Report and on emergency housing; cuttings from an article by Randolph Churchill, quoting Charles Waterhouse on Government over-spending; press cutting from the Times on the cost in dollars of losing oil from Persia [Iran]; a letter from [Richard] Michael Fraser [Joint Director, Conservative Research Department], with notes on Conservative conscription policy and the co-ordination of party political broadcasts; notes on comments made by Clement Attlee on WSC; extracts from former speeches by WSC on the Trade Unions and hope for the future; notes on the Labour Party's reaction to the rearmament programme in the Conservative Party's 1935 election manifesto; note by George Christ [Parliamentary Liaison Officer, Conservative Party] on the tax system in the United States.Speech notes and typescript for WSC's election address (2 October, Liverpool Stadium) on subjects including: the Government's clumsy foreign policy towards the United States and Europe, and over the evacuation of British oil personnel from Abadan [Iran]; partisan politics, the political stalemate and the need for stable, broad-based government; the extension of National Service; the danger of making false promises on the future of the economy; the results of State trading, particularly in cotton; the Government bias against the Stock Exchange. Source material includes notes from George Christ on the repetition of the Government's assurances on Persia by the Lord Chancellor [1st Lord Jowitt] and on the number of Communists in the local division. Also includes brief speech notes on social services, nationalization, the cost of living, housing, rearmament and increasing production.
