Scope and Contents
Includes typescript and galley proofs of Chapter 3 "Penalties in Malaya" [provisionally entitled "Shock at Singapore" and "Retreat in Malaya"] and of Appendix 5 (a memorandum on Singapore defences by Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Pownall). Annotated with suggested amendments and corrections by various people including: WSC, Denis Kelly, William Deakin, Charles Wood, [George] Gordon Allen, Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Pownall, Sir Edward Marsh and ?1st Lord Alanbrooke [earlier Field Marshal Alan Brooke].Also includes some source material including: notes from Pownall (6) on various subjects including the defence of Singapore Island, the waterlogging of the Kra Isthmus; a War Cabinet paper (dating to November 1941) on the situation in Siam [later Thailand]; newspaper cuttings from the Times on the fall of Singapore; WSC's notes on events and on defence policy in the Far East; notes from Allen; and copies of telegrams from Admiral Sir Geoffrey Layton (Commander in Chief of the Eastern Fleet); and some proofs of Volume 3.The majority of material in the file dates to 1948-1950.
