Scope and Contents

Includes typescript and galley proofs of Chapter 30 "Operation 'Crusader': Ashore, Aloft and Afloat" (provisionally entitled "Crusader", "Challenge in the Mediterranean" and "The Mediterranean- the lowest ebb in our fortunes". [Crusader was the codename for the British North African operation]. Annotated with notes and suggestions by various people including: WSC, Denis Kelly, William Deakin, Charles Wood, Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Pownall, Sir Norman Brook [later 1st Lord Normanbrook, Secretary to the Cabinet], [1st Lord] Ismay, Kathleen Hill [WSC's Secretary], Sir Edward Marsh, [George] Gordon Allen, and ?1st Lord Alanbrooke.Some source material is also present in the file including: 7 letters from Pownall with notes; letters from Kelly and Deakin; maps of Tobruk [Libya]; a printed despatch from General Sir Claude Auchinleck on operations in the Middle East between November 1941 and August 1942, when Auchinleck was Commander in Chief in the Middle East [printed as a supplement to the London Gazette in 1947]; and copies of correspondence from Lettice Marston [later Lettice Shillingford, WSC's Secretary].The majority of items in the file date to 1949.
